Fortunately the Ultimate Edition (Director's Cut) was released on physical media along with the theatrical cut at the same time and many agreed it was far superior and should of been the official cut from the beginning and I now think the film is a 4.5/5.
I'm guessing when it came time to release the Enhanced Edition, someone at WB/HBO saw "Ultimate Edition" and "Enhanced Edition" and had a brainfart or something. Edit: Ultimate Edition is the director's cut and Enhanced Edition is the remaster of the director's cut, for clarification.
The theatrical version is a bit of a mess. The Superman plot is VERY undercooked and hard to follow. The ultimate edition is a solid enough movie compared to the average CBM, but it still has a very particular tone and take on the characters that is VERY divisive and that’s why lots of people talk about it like it’s hot garbage.

Of course Amazon's listing for this Ultimate Edition makes no mention of any of these changes and the Editorial Review refers to the Extended Cut and the Theatrical Version. It says that the Theatrical Cut is included but I don't believe the Theatrical or the original Extended Cut is included since this seems to be a 1 disc release.
