As I recall the automatic map updates are switched on an off via the MMI: SETTINGS-->System Maintenance-->Automatic Online Map Updates. You need to have the CARE wifi connection active. Updates are just that--UPDATES. If the map info in the car has been corrupted generally the update will not work.

You'll need a PC for this. To start the installation you must download the Audi MMI 3G Plus Navigation Maps file. Once you have it put the file on an SD card. Now go into the car and insert the sd card. Go to engineering and then update. Now you are in the software update section.
